Excess Baggage, a black romantic comedy about an heiress raised by the family assassin, won the first Austin Film Festival screenwriting award and was purchased and produced by Columbia Pictures starring the then hot off Clueless young star Alicia Silverstone.

The script, an original spec by Max Adams, would launch the screenwriter’s career, but myriad problems during production because of conflicts between the lead actress, studio, and director would cause problems with the final film’s release.
