doves and hawks

I had a fight with someone recently over a petition. It was one of those "Okay go ahead and start World War Three but please don't hurt anybody" petitions. I would not sign it and said so. That person got mad and told me it was "interesting how many doves who may never see blood or pull bodies from the rubble are now turning hawks."

***

Blood is like water. It is only when it dries it gets sticky. New it runs. In puddles. Rivers. Down asphalt. Pavement. Sidewalk. Like water. Only it is so red. And it smells wrong.

***

It is amazing how much blood the human body can lose and stay alive.

I carry gloves in my car. My purse. My pockets. A bag.

I do not tell people why.

They think it is funny.

***

I am watching Law & Order. There is a show on about a Russian shopkeeper who is held up and shoots the hold up guys who came to rob and kill him. Michael Moriarty prosecutes him.

***

As far as I know no one I have been in altercation with has died. I figure they have not. My altercations have been with people bigger than me. I did not wait around to see how the other guy was.

***

I got the gun. And went through three thousand rounds learning how to use it.

Before I got that gun, I had to decide I was willing to kill another person. Then one day I knew that was not it. Anyone I would shoot was not a person.

***

Before I bought that gun, I fought with my hands.

Contusions and abrasions is polite doctor and police speak for "Why are you alive?"

***

I am the daughter of pacifists. We did not touch guns. Not even toy guns.

***

If I were a dove I would be dead.

Not Deadly Yours,

That Adams Girl
