you owe me

Wow it is July. That means August is right around the corner (insert tales from the obvious theme here) and (less obvious) in August I will have been in Seattle two years. That is a long time for me. Two years. My location limit usually is three years. Then my shoes grow wings and like Mercury I am gone and somewhere else. Which I guess means Seattle has one year left to impact me so hard my mercury ways change but I do not think that is going to happen. On anniversaries I get reflective and think too much. So being in Seattle two years is going to have me thinking about things like, What have I accomplished here? And things like, What comes next? But right now thinking that just makes my eyes cross so I will save it for the real true two year anniversary in August and for now -- The big news is my entire "YOU HAVE TO READ THIS" stack is gone. Finished. Done. Read. In the "YOU DID THIS" pile. YAY YAY YAY! I am a free woman and can go back to work on my script. Which has been sitting here while I worked on other peoples' scripts a real long time now and my managers are probably wondering if I will ever write a script again. There is still a "YOU SHOULD READ THIS" stack. Guess if that is going to happen? No way. I am going to work on my script and be a vegetable watching cable movies and eating ice cream for days and days. Meanwhile it is time for thoughts and I have been getting lots of interesting mail lately so this episode of thoughts is -- YOU OWE ME I am discovering interesting phenomenons associated with being an author. I have not been an author before so this is all new to me and learn as you go. One thing that happens a lot is I get email from people asking me questions. I can't answer email questions because if I did I would spend all my time answering email questions instead of doing what I am supposed to be doing and that is writing. I used to have someone else answer email too. But that made people mad. (Jeez.) So now I answer the email and when I get questions I email back I can't do the individual correspondence thing but come talk on the message board. And -- That makes people mad too. People are mad at me all the time these days. Some people are mad about the book. Some people are mad about the contest. Some people are mad about the reading disclaimers. Some people are mad about the email. Some people are mad about the message board. One guy was mad I was a girl. (People sure find a lot of things to be mad about.) I get yelled at lots. My favorite mad people are people who email "I haven't finished the book and I just started this chapter here and you say this thing and could you explain that?" And I think, Well gee I do explain it and if you would finish the chapter you would know that. That is what I think. What I say is, "Please ask your question on the message board." And that makes people mad too. One guy got especially mad and told me since he was nice enough to buy my book and read it (not the whole thing but I guess starting a chapter is good enough) I owed him. Big. I had to think about that. What do I owe readers? I wasn't sure so I asked a friend who is smarter about stuff like this than me and he said, "Yes if he bought the book you do owe him something and he is holding it right now." (I have the smartest friends.) So. The next person who writes me mean email saying I owe him because he bought the book? Yes
I do owe you something. The book. Go read it.
PS: This just in: I just got a look at the Eshay.com screenwriting competition rules. The Eshay rules say if you swipe material you will get thrown out of the Eshay competition right off. In the irony department, the langues of those rules is startlingly familiar. (Can anyone spell copyright infringement? Jeez, what sort of example is that setting?) Make fun of Eshay for swiping copyrighted rules. PPS: Eshay has pulled their pdf files and redone their entry form. Whew! That was fast. No one has apologized or anything for STEALING MY PAGES though so I'm still mad. PPPS: I have beeen revamping the message board. Go see at talk back. Oh, and while you are there, type something. (wink)
