In honor of the new millenium and to celebrate the publication of "The Screenwriter's Survival Guide or Guerilla Meeting Tactics and Other Acts of War" 440Films and SeeMaxRun are sponsoring "Three Pages," a comedy scene writing competition. Yay!

What It's All About: "Three Pages" is a comedy scene writing competition for screenwriters.

Who May Enter: Anyone may enter but we think Shane Black and William Goldman are probably doing fine and shouldn't and the idea is to give newcomers a chance here.

What To Enter: A one to three page scene. It must be comedy. It must be original. And it must be written by you.

*Content is up to you but the judges do not really go for slapstick and bathroom humor around here so that might not be your best first choice.

*We do not care about genre, just make it funny and you are in there.

*Public figures are fair game but we are real tired of Monica Lewinsky (sp?) jokes so that might not be your best first choice either.

*Characters owned and copyrighted by other individuals (for example Bat Man) may only be used if the scene is satire.

What You Get If You Win: Max reads your feature length script and tells her Hollywood friends about it if she likes it and gives you big notes if she thinks it needs work still.

(We would like to say Max automatically sends your script to all her friends but can't because one good scene does not always guarantee someone can write a full movie but she will do her best and be helpful and supportive if it looks like the script still needs work.)

Winning scenes are published on SeeMaxRun and we make a fuss over you.

Winners get free signed copies of "The Screenwriter's Survival Guide or Guerilla Meeting Tactics and Other Acts of War."

What It Costs To Enter: Five dollars. We thought about it a lot and it just seemed like you should be making some sort of commitment here so five bucks is it.

How Many Winners Are There?: There are up to three winners. We had to think about that too and decided three pages, three winners worked out.

What You Get If You Do Not Win: Well you don't get a thing if you do not win. Sorry about that. But we plan to publish honorable mention scenes along the way.

*Chances of getting an honorable mention scene published are better if you enter before everyone else instead of the last possible day.

Who Are the Judges?: Well gee Santa has a lot of out of work elves this time of year --

Just kidding.

The judges are Max and writers and industry professionals selected by Max. Max is the final judge on all entries though and since she is the one who has to read your script that seemed fair to us and her decisions are final.

What Qualities the Judges Look For In Entries: Good writing and funny scenes.

What Feedback You Can Expect: Well, if you do not win, none. Sorry, we just cannot write feedback for every entry.

What You Agree To By Entering Three Pages: You agree that your submitted scene(s) may be published on the SeeMaxRun website and/or its message board Click This.

You agree that your name and scene(s) may be used by 440Films and/or SeeMaxRun for promotional and educational purposes.

You promise that you understand submitted scenes will not be returned to you and swear on a stack of bibles you kept a copy.

You swear up and down you understand entry fees will not be returned even if you disqualify yourself and you will not whine about it.

You understand contest judging is subjective and the judges' decisions are final and if you win you win and if you lose you lose and that is the way it is.

You guarantee the scene you are submitting is written by you and you only and your property and you did not swipe it off the internet or anywhere else.

How To Get Thrown Out Of The Competition Right Off: If your scene is over three pages, you are out of there.

If your scene is not in script format, you are out of there.

If your scene is not funny, you are out of there.

If your scene is submitted without an entry form and/or entry fee, you are out of there.

*That means the whole entry form kids. The entry form is a legal and binding agreement and if you submit only a portion of it, you are out of there.

If you swiped your scene from someone or somewhere else and we catch you doing it (and we probably will), you are out of there.

If you submit a full length script we promise we can spot the difference between three pages and a full length script right off and you are out of there AND your script is going straight in a recycling bin unread so just do not even try that it will not work.

The Rules: You may enter more than one scene but each scene must be mailed in its own envelope with a its own entry form and entry fee.

You can only win once so if your scene comes in in the top three and you have submitted other scenes, other scenes submitted by you will be set aside so two other people get a chance too.

Scenes must be submitted in screenplay format and that means twelve point courier font with real screenplay margins.

No writing partners. Sorry. If you win and want to send a feature you wrote with a partner for your read we will talk but this scene entry has to be just you.

No email entries. Email causes formatting and software headaches nobody around here needs so all entries must be mailed hard copy snail mail.

No posting entries on the message board. If you do that the administrators will evaporate your post in two seconds so send it hard copy snail mail or else.

The Cut Off Date: Entries must be recieved by February 28, 2001. (You have two months, go.)

The Announcement: Winners will be announced on or around April 1, 2001 and no we are not kidding the dates just worked out that way.

How To Submit Your Scene: Print and fill out the entry form.

Place the page number and your name in the upper right corner of each scene page.

Staple your scene to your entry form with the entry form on the bottom and the staple in the upper left page corner.

Mail your scene and entry form with a check or money order for the five dollar entry fee payable to "440Films Three Pages" in a regular business sized envelope to:

Three Pages, c/o 440Films, 2608 Second Ave., Suite 286, Seattle, WA 98121.

*Please do not send cash, there are unhappy rumors about envelopes containing cash disappearing in the mail and they may not be true but we just think your scene has a better chance of arriving if there is not cash in that envelope.

How You Know Your Submission Arrived: If you want confirmation your scene arrived, also enclose a stamped self addressed post card that says "Yes my scene arrived at Three Pages" and we will stick it in the mail to you after your scene comes in.
